The Gyrfalcon (Giervalk) – (Falco Rusticolus)
The Gyrfalcon is the largest of the Falcon species. Living on the Arctic coasts and the islands of North America, Europe, and Asia. The Gyrfalcon is dispersed throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, with populations reaching Northern America, Greenland and Northern Europe. Due to the locations its plumage can vary, with birds being coloured from all-white to dark brown. For centuries, gyrfalcons has been a precious hunting bird, highly valued among the Falconers.
The birds common name could be derived from the Latin word ‘gyrus’ – “circle” – from the species circling as it searches for its pray, a distinctive method of hunting from other falcons in its range.
